Offer Description

The Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, Institute of Bioprocess Sciences and Engineering is currently seeking a Postgraduate Research Associate (project employment)

Extent of employment: 30 hours per week

Duration of employment: 1st of July 2026, limited to 31st of December 2028

Workplace: 1190 Vienna

Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1

Gross monthly salary: depending on previous eligible experience at least € 2.832,10, payable 14 times per year

Responsibilities

  • Start your PhD studies at BOKU University and participate one of our doctoral programs including lectures, events, workshops and retreats
  • Carry out research project Life cycle analysis and cost models for plant-derived pharmaceuticals
  • Investigate the ecological and economic impacts of producing recombinant pharmaceutical proteins in plants
  • Develop improved cost models for different manufacturing scenarios in plants such as transient or transgenic expression
  • Combine production cost models with assessments of environmental impact to understand where plant-based processes can be more sustainable compared to conventional manufacturing
  • Apply the models to three real-life protein examples to be used in the context of mitigating health threats

Required skills and qualifications

  • Diploma degree in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Engineering or other equivalent university degree
  • Language skills: English (B2 or better)

Desirable skills and qualifications

  • Confidence in communicating and presenting scientific work to colleagues, at conferences and to public
  • Experience in writing scientific publications
  • Experience with process modeling
  • Experience with plant expression systems
  • Experience in working recombinant proteins
  • Experience with life cycle analysis
