The Department of Ecosystem Management, Climate and Biodiversity, Institute of Meteorology and Climatology is currently seeking a Postgraduate Research Associate in project employment.
Extent of employment: 30 hours per week
Duration of employment: 1st of November 2025, limited to 31st of October 2026, with option for temporary extension
Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1
Gross monthly salary: depending on previous eligible experience at least Euro 2.786,10, payable 14 times per year
Responsibilities
- Perform research in the area of climate dynamics and atmospheric chemistry with focus on chemistry-climate connections during geomagnetic excursions and reversals, for example Laschamps
- Perform and analyze chemistry-climate model simulations
- Quantify and contrast the changes emerging in atmospheric composition and climate from factors such as variations in solar activity, extreme solar energetic particle events, extreme geomagnetic storms, or volcanic eruptions with those emerging from variations in Earth’s geomagnetic field
- Evaluate chemistry-climate model outputs against isotope records and paleoclimate archives
- Collaborate closely with the team members of the research group and with research partners from GFZ Potsdam and the Universities of Helsinki and Oulu within the ERC Synergy project Geomagnetic Excursions and Reversals: Establishing their Atmospheric and Climatic Effects, GERACLE
- Pursue doctoral studies at BOKU University is desired
- Disseminate research results in scientific journals and at scientific meetings
- Contribute to the advising of bachelor and master students
- Participate in administrative tasks at the institute level
Required skills and qualifications
- Diploma degree in meteorology, physics or chemistry or other equivalent university degree
- Students, preferably in meteorology, physics or chemistry, whose graduation is imminent
- Good command of English language
- Background in climate dynamics and atmospheric chemistry
- Experience in chemistry-climate modelling and/or model output analysis
- Proficiency in scientific programming and statistical data analysis and visualization
Desirable skills and qualifications
- Team player, reliable, open
- Willingness to travel for national or international conferences or workshops
- Work on and solve problems independently, meet deadlines
