The Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, Institute of Bioprocess Engineering is currently seeking a Postgraduate Research Associate in project employment.
Extent of employment: 30 hours per week
Duration of employment: 1st of November 2025, limited to 31st of October 2028
Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1
Gross monthly salary: depending on previous eligible experience at least Euro 2.786,10, payable 14 times per year
Responsibilities
- Development of new bioprocessing technologies for the cultivation of stem cells and extracellular vesicles for therapeutic medicine, including cultivation in bioreactors, characterization of cell growth, viability and EV quality, and harvesting of cells and EVs as products.
- Creation of digital twin for fluidized bed bioreactors by integrating CFD/DEM simulations and statistical modeling, including incorporation of cell physiology into the models.
- Design and prototyping of reactor components and cultivation modules using 3D printing and additive manufacturing, closely aligned with modeling and process data.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration with experts in bioprocess engineering, cell biology and computer-based modeling.
- Independent planning, execution and evaluation of experiments and simulations, as well as publication of results in scientific journals and presentation at conferences.
- Co-supervision of Master's and Bachelor's theses.
Required skills and qualifications
- Diploma degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioprocess Engineering, Chemical Engineering/Process Engineering with a focus on Biotechnology or other equivalent university degree.
- Excellent English proficiency; German is not required.
Desirable skills and qualifications
- Strong ability to self-organize and work independently.
- High level of motivation and willingness to learn.
- Strong team spirit.
- Experience in bioprocess development for mammalian cells.
- Experience in analysis of particulate products such as EVs, viruses or similar products.
- Experience in CFD simulation and technical CAD design.
- Experience in hybrid modeling of bioprocesses.
