Organizational Setting

The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA's duties and responsibilities as the world's nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. The Office of Safeguards Analytical Services is responsible for the analysis of inspection samples collected in the field and is located about 45 km south of Vienna in Seibersdorf.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Technical Support Team, the Mechanical Technician (Seals) prepares the IAEA's metal seals and field verifiable passive seals in accordance with procedural guidelines. These seals are used by Nuclear Safeguards Inspectors during verification activities. The Mechanical Technician also provides ad-hoc assistance to mechanics as required.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Prepare metal seals work, including batches of 500 pieces at once.
  • Ensure fabrication, finishing and documentation of seals.
  • Source raw materials.
  • Assemble copper and brass components via ultrasonic welding and soldering.
  • Manually engrave unique signatures.
  • Perform specialized cleaning and finishing.
  • Carry out visual quality control.
  • Sort, pack, record and organize delivery to the Vienna International Centre.
  • Prepare field verifiable passive seals, including batches of 600 pieces at once.
  • Request randomized image templates.
  • Prepare and transfer engraving programmes to laser systems.
  • Load and position plugs and cups to run laser engraving programmes.

  • Expertise in logging, tracking and inventorying mechanical components.
  • Knowledge of MS Office.
  • Expertise in safely operating mechanical devices.

Qualifications, Experience and Language Skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Minimum of two years of working experience as a technician.
  • Experience in operating mechanical and/or electronic equipment.
  • Good oral and written command of English.
  • Knowledge of other official IAEA languages is an asset.

Remuneration

Recruitment will be on a local basis only. Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise followed by a competency-based interview. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report.
