Organizational Setting

The Department of Management provides a platform of services that supports the delivery of the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes. The Division of Conference and Document Services organizes meetings and conferences, issues documents in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and edits, prints and distributes publications.

The MTCD Language Services Section coordinates, manages and delivers language services for the Agency. It promotes multilingualism and maintains language standards through editing and translation of Policy-Making Organ documents, Secretariat documents and correspondence, web articles, advocacy material, publications and other content.

IAEA Talent Pipeline

The purpose of this pipeline announcement is to enhance the Agency's roster of highly specialized language specialists, including translators, revisers, editors and précis-writers. The language specialist translates or revises administrative, legal, economic, scientific and technical texts, specifically in nuclear technology and applications, nuclear safety and security, safeguards and verifications, physics and engineering. The role may also include editing such documents and drafting official records of Policy-Making Organ meetings.

The talent pipeline is open to enable language specialists to express their interest in freelance employment with the IAEA. Expressions of interest will be reviewed for temporary or freelance, home-based opportunities. Engagement duration may be ongoing and contractual hiring will follow UN system rules and, where appropriate, the AITC Agreement.

Key Results Expected

  • Translate a broad range of administrative, legal, scientific and technical texts, ensuring equivalence in meaning and style.
  • Translate from English into Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish, or from Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, German and other languages into English.
  • Edit administrative, legal, scientific and technical content.
  • Draft summary records of official Policy-Making Organ meetings.
  • Research terminology to support the central terminology database.
  • Perform other linguistic duties as required.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • University degree in languages or a related field; degrees in other fields may be considered as appropriate.
  • Excellent oral and written command of official United Nations languages with profound knowledge of grammar, style and usage.
  • Relevant experience in translating, revising, editing and/or drafting scientific and technical texts, especially in the nuclear field or in an international organization, is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office and IT translation tools, in particular Trados Studio and Multiterm, is required.
  • Familiarity with the IAEA and its operations is an asset.
  • Testing may be part of the selection process.
