Power Electronics Engineer (f/m/d) – Medium Voltage & High-Power Conversion Systems

CENTER FOR ENERGY

As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, AIT is dedicated to making substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation.

The Center for Energy is looking for a new Ingenious Partner for the location in Vienna. The Center for Energy works on solutions for the sustainable energy system of the future, with a particular focus on the development of power electronics converters for mobile applications such as electric vehicles, ships and aviation, as well as grid-tied renewable energy solutions.

The team Power Electronics & System Components covers the whole range of power electronics system development, from development of novel solutions for the electricity grid, via specification and prototyping, towards system test and validation and beyond.

Your tasks

  • Support the design, development and validation of high-power isolated power converters up to MW range and the development of converter topologies for medium-voltage applications up to 30 kV.
  • Design and optimize DC/DC, AC/DC, and DC/AC converters as well as solid-state transformer architectures.
  • Contribute to the development of resonant and soft-switching topologies and support the integration of medium voltage high frequency transformers, medium-voltage insulation systems, and high-frequency magnetic components.
  • Perform electrical, thermal, and magnetic simulations using tools such as PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice/PSIM, and ANSYS Maxwell or other FEM-based tools.
  • Define power-stage architectures, including semiconductor selection, gate-driver design, protection concepts, and EMC/EMI mitigation measures.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, control, and system engineers to ensure successful end-to-end product integration.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industrial standards, safety requirements, and certification guidelines.
  • Use real-time-simulation platforms such as PLECS RT BOX and OPAL-RT for basic testing of developed hardware.
  • Work on research and development projects, prepare technical reports and scientific publications, and present research results to customers, research partners, and colleagues.
  • Represent the company's expertise in medium-voltage and high-power engineering to customers, partners, and external stakeholders.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner

  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
  • Several years of experience in power electronic systems.
  • Expertise in medium voltage systems up to 20 kV, high-power converters up to MW, and isolated converter topologies.
  • Understanding of medium-frequency transformer design, medium-voltage insulation systems, magnetic components, and thermal management.
  • Experience with wide-bandgap semiconductors, preferably SiC.
  • Knowledge of power converter control strategies, including closed-loop control, PWM techniques, and digital control systems.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment for medium-voltage testing and power analysis.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex power electronic systems.
  • Very good English skills; German skills are a nice to have.

What to expect

  • The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis of 38.5 hours per week according to the collective agreement is EUR 61,334. The actual salary will be determined individually based on qualifications and experience.
  • Company benefits, flexible working conditions including Home-Office, and individual training and career opportunities.
  • Mentorship and training in embedded firmware and power systems.
  • The opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge power converter technologies in a collaborative and innovative engineering environment.

Please submit your complete application documents online, consisting of CV, cover letter, relevant certificates and documents, as well as proof of identity.
