Organizational Setting

The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology supports Member States in accessing technologies, sharing good practices and developing safe and effective approaches across research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.

The Research Reactor Section assists Member States throughout the research reactor life cycle, from the decision to build a research reactor and development of supporting infrastructure to safe and sustainable operation, ageing management, fuel management, decommissioning and disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

Main Purpose

The Technical Lead manages project activities including gathering and disseminating good practices on research reactor commissioning, operation, ageing management, refurbishment and modernization. The role improves research reactor performance and integrated management systems, fosters partnerships and networks, assists Member States in assessing and improving operational practices, and coordinates technical reports, guidance and best practice documents.

Functions and Key Results

  • Arrange and conduct consultancy meetings, technical meetings, conferences, symposia, workshops and scientific meetings in research reactor operation and maintenance.
  • Organize peer review and advisory missions for research reactor operating organizations.
  • Prepare technical documents and reports on commissioning, operation, ageing management, refurbishment, modernization, analysis and modelling.
  • Promote, coordinate and evaluate Coordinated Research Projects and complex studies.
  • Contribute to or manage e-tools such as research reactor information hubs, e-learning and databases.
  • Provide technical assistance to Member States through technical cooperation projects.
  • Liaise with Permanent Missions, Member State organizations and NGOs on operational projects.
  • Collaborate with IAEA divisions, international organizations and Member States.

Required Expertise

  • Nuclear Engineering and Project Management.
  • Research reactor design, commissioning, operation and maintenance, including ageing management, refurbishment and modernization.
  • Research reactor analysis and modelling, planning and building of new research reactor facilities.

Qualifications, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university degree in Nuclear Engineering or another related technical degree.
  • A university degree in Nuclear Engineering or another related technical degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 10 years of working experience in the subject area, including two years at international level.
  • Experience in fuel cycle, research reactor modelling and analysis, and research reactor infrastructure development is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written English. Knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $103165 plus a variable post adjustment currently amounting to US $55915, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, six weeks annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
