Organizational Setting

The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology supports Member States in building capacity to access technologies, share good practices and develop safe and effective approaches across research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.

The Research Reactor Section assists Member States through every stage of the research reactor life cycle, from the initial decision to build a research reactor and development of national supporting infrastructure through safe and sustainable operation, fuel management, decommissioning preparation and spent nuclear fuel disposal.

Main Purpose

The Technical Lead manages project activities devoted to assisting IAEA Member States in planning and building new research reactors and assessing and developing the national infrastructure needed to support such projects. The role also promotes and facilitates access to research reactors for nuclear capacity building and coordinates technical reports, guidance and best practice documents.

Functions

  • Arrange and conduct consultants' meetings, technical meetings, conferences, symposia, workshops and other scientific meetings.
  • Organize and conduct peer review missions on development of nuclear infrastructure for research reactor projects.
  • Prepare technical documents and reports in the field of planning and building new research reactors.
  • Provide technical assistance to Member States through IAEA Technical Cooperation projects.
  • Liaise with Permanent Missions, Member State organizations and NGOs on planning, funding and implementation of operational projects.
  • Collaborate with members of the Section, Division, other Divisions, international organizations and Member States.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced university degree in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics or another nuclear-related technical degree.
  • University degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • At least 10 years of working experience in the subject area, including at least 2 years at international level.
  • Experience in new research reactor projects, supporting infrastructure assessment and development, and nuclear capacity building using research reactors.
  • Experience in research reactor utilization and strategic planning, operation and maintenance, modernization and refurbishment, or fuel technology is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written English; knowledge of another official IAEA language is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $103,165, variable post adjustment currently US $55,915, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, 6 weeks annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
