Innovative Nuclear Technology Transport Safety Specialist (P4)

Contract Type: Fixed Term - Regular, 36 months

Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety and safety in the transport of radioactive material.

The Transport Safety Unit establishes and maintains safety standards related to the worldwide safe transport of radioactive material, including the IAEA's Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. It manages projects, provides training, maintains databases and convenes meetings with experts from Member States and international organizations.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Unit Head, the Innovative Nuclear Technology Transport Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing activities related to the safe transport of radioactive material and advanced nuclear technologies.

Role

The specialist acts as a substantive expert developing and reviewing international safety standards and guidance, as an adviser to Member States and international organizations, and as a technical officer implementing complex multi-disciplinary technical assistance projects.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Develop, review and revise safety standards and technical documents on specific areas related to the safe transport of radioactive material and advanced nuclear technologies.
  • Provide advice to Member States and international organizations on safe transport of radioactive material and harmonized application of international regulations.
  • Strengthen forums to increase awareness of topical issues related to transport safety.
  • Plan, organize and lead complex technical meetings in the area of Transport Safety.

Required Expertise

  • Application and development of IAEA Safety Standards.
  • Safety assessment of spent fuel, high-level waste and advanced fuel transport packages.
  • Training and education development in transport safety or regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of international conventions, laws, codes and treaties for transport safety.
  • Regulatory experience in the safe transport of radioactive material.

Qualifications, Experience and Language Skills

  • Advanced university degree in nuclear science, nuclear technology, nuclear engineering or a related discipline; a first level degree plus two additional years of relevant experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in safety assessments related to transporting radioactive material or nuclear power plants.
  • Participation in the development or application of IAEA safety standards related to transport and nuclear installations.
  • Ability to prepare high-quality and accurate technical documents.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English; knowledge of another official IAEA language is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $86,027, variable post adjustment currently amounting to US $44,820, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, six weeks annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
