Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme. The Division of Nuclear Security is responsible for establishing, coordinating and implementing the IAEA's nuclear security programme to protect against, detect and respond to criminal acts or acts of nuclear terrorism and related threats.

The Nuclear Security Detection Architecture Unit supports States in developing national nuclear security detection architectures, including strategies, concepts of operation, exercises, human resource development, sustainability strategies and guidance publications.

Main Purpose

Under the supervision of the Unit Head, the Science and Technology Technical Lead facilitates work in science and technology and provides expertise and delivery of content to Member States to help develop and sustain effective capabilities in this area.

Role

The role acts as technical lead for programme design, coordination and delivery of nuclear security science and technology activities, as a recognized expert in nuclear security sciences and technologies, as coordinator and manager of complex projects, as scientific secretary for international scientific meetings, and as substantive contributor to nuclear detection architecture, national response operations and INSServ missions.

Functions and Key Results Expected

• Coordinate and provide technical input and expertise related to nuclear science and technology matters.
• Organize, facilitate and monitor research projects, research coordination meetings, technical meetings and consultancy meetings.
• Develop and implement capacity building activities with Member States based on identified needs and priorities.
• Provide technical input and develop Nuclear Security Guidance documents, training materials and publications.
• Analyze information and trends to drive innovation and priorities for research and development of tools and applications.
• Ensure timely collection, analysis and dissemination of scientific and technical information and results.
• Promote effective and sustainable implementation of tools, software and applications in Member States.

Qualifications, Experience and Language Skills

• Advanced university degree in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering or another nuclear security related field.
• A university degree in a related field with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
• Minimum seven years of experience in nuclear security, including five years in research, development and deployment of nuclear security systems.
• Experience as project manager, researcher, programme developer and in nuclear security operations.
• Scientific knowledge of radiation detection equipment, physical protection systems, software and hardware tools, and emerging nuclear security threats and technologies.
• Experience contributing to research projects and developing technical documents and guidance.
• Excellent oral and written English; knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $86,027, a variable post adjustment currently amounting to US $46,627, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, six weeks annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
