Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Energy fosters the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in improving nuclear power plant performance, nuclear fuel cycle activities, nuclear waste management, national energy planning, new nuclear power plant deployment, nuclear knowledge management and research reactor operation.

The Nuclear Power Engineering Section assists Member States in developing safe and effective nuclear power plant operation and expanding existing nuclear programmes. It provides guidance and information exchange on design, construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance, decommissioning, project management, management systems, supply chain and quality management, performance improvement and expansion planning.

Main Purpose

As a manager and team leader reporting to the Director of the Nuclear Power Division, the Section Head plans, initiates, implements, guides, coordinates and supervises the IAEA programme activities concerning nuclear power engineering support for nuclear power programmes and the management of construction and operation of nuclear power plants.

Functions

• Plan, manage, coordinate, monitor and supervise the activities of the Section according to Member States' needs.
• Support excellence in the operation of nuclear facilities, including plant life management, long term operation, advanced technology in instrumentation and control, monitoring, diagnosis, inspection, engineering tools, maintenance optimization, component reliability and performance improvement.
• Support countries considering or expanding nuclear power programmes through guidance, workshops, technical cooperation projects and advisory services.
• Coordinate specialized technical input to technical cooperation projects and provide technical guidance.
• Organize scientific meetings, serve as scientific secretary, prepare scientific programmes and contribute to scientific publications.
• Promote international information exchange on nuclear power engineering and related experience.
• Represent the IAEA at national and international meetings and maintain contacts with relevant organizations and scientific societies.

Required Expertise

• Knowledge of nuclear power plant construction, project management and plant operations management.
• Guidance and technical support for technical cooperation programmes.
• Extensive knowledge of nuclear engineering and technological processes for safe and reliable operation of nuclear power plants.
• Comprehensive understanding of nuclear fuel cycle stages and related facilities.
• Management of teams and complex projects, including programme activities and budgets related to nuclear power engineering.

Qualifications

• Advanced university degree in nuclear engineering, engineering or a related technical discipline.
• A university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant professional experience in nuclear power engineering activities.
• More than 5 years of international experience is desirable.
• Demonstrated experience in project management, design, monitoring, implementation and management of human and financial resources.
• Demonstrated knowledge and technical experience in safety practices and standards.
• Excellent oral and written command of English; knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish is an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $103165, a variable post adjustment currently amounting to US $53646, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses, six weeks' annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
