Scientists (f/m/d) for Advanced Algorithms in 5G/6G Wireless Networks

AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is Austria’s largest Research and Technology Organisation (RTO). We aim to transform scientific excellence into innovation with impact. Together with our partners, we develop technologies and solutions for a sustainable, resilient, and digitalised future, strengthening Europe’s competitiveness and technological sovereignty. Our international teams combine cutting-edge research with strong implementation expertise to create measurable value for industry and society.

Our Center for Digital Safety and Security is looking for new Ingenious Partners for our location in Vienna (Giefinggasse, 1210). In the Reliable Wireless Communication and Sensing research team, we develop energy efficient solutions for reliable wireless 5G/6G communication and sensing. We are enthusiastically researching integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) methods in mobile indoor and outdoor scenarios using 5G/6G physical layer technologies.

CENTER FOR DIGITAL SAFETY & SECURITY

You will investigate cooperative positioning and advanced localisation algorithms for wireless communication networks in complex outdoor scenarios, using AIT’s Radio-Frequency lab and an optical tracking system to obtain accurate ground-truth position measurements.
You will validate the algorithms through numerical simulations and empirical measurements, while contributing to the development and deployment of a distributed wireless network using state-of-the-art hardware and software-defined radio (SDR) technology.

You will publish your research results at conferences and in international journals.
You will gain expertise in a research field with a wide range of applications, spanning construction, logistics, aviation, railways, agriculture, robotics, and defence.
You will work alongside an international team of scientists and expand your professional network through European-wide research projects.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner

Completed technical studies (Master’s degree or PhD) related to Telecommunications, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
Experience in at least one of the following profiles:

1. Distributed localisation in wireless networks

2. Positioning and sensing in 5G/6G networks

Please describe in the cover letter how your CV and expertise match with at least one of the technological areas above (explicitly referring to 1.– 2.) Applications that do not address this point may not be considered further.

Excellent knowledge in the field of statistical signal processing and numerical simulation software development (Python or MATLAB)
Sound knowledge of radio propagation modeling and data analysis, machine learning, algorithm design and validation
Experience in performing lab measurements and collecting datasets for validation of developed algorithms
Good understanding of algorithms in the field of wireless communications (beamforming, channel estimation, signaling, …)
Interest in reading and writing scientific publications and motivation for solving application-oriented challenges from industry
High level of commitment and ability to work in a team
Good language skills in English (spoken & written). German language skills are an advantage.

What to expect

The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) according to the collective agreement is EUR 56.784,--. The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience.
In case of interest, we offer the opportunity to pursue a PhD at TU Wien alongside your full-time employment as a Scientist.
Highlights of our employee benefits include a canteen and meal allowance, organic coffee, tea and fruit baskets, preventive healthcare benefits and company doctor, pension fund, additional days off for various life events, family benefits (including two weeks of paid paternity leave “Papa-Weeks” and leisure subsidies), voucher programme, sports, cultural and socialising events and many more, as well as flexitime models (incl. up to 50% home office), travel support for conferences and networking, and individual training and career development opportunities.

At AIT, we create an inclusive and family-friendly working environment that promotes equal opportunities and actively strengthens diversity across our workforce and in leadership positions.
