Wer im Supermarkt einkauft, bekommt von der Logistik dahinter nichts mit. Dafür sorgt unter anderem ein Betrieb in Leoben. Die KNAPP Systemintegration GmbH plant und baut automatisierte Lager, die den Lebensmittelhandel beliefern, stationär genauso wie online. Zu den Kunden zählen SPAR, REWE, die israelische Kette Shufersal und der US-Handelskonzern Kroger.
Der Betrieb gehört seit 1995 zur steirischen KNAPP-Gruppe und ist dort der Spezialist für Lebensmittel- und Leergutlogistik. Konkret heißt das: Software und Maschinen, die Getränkekisten sortieren, Ware kommissionieren und ganze Rücknahmesysteme für Leergut steuern. Aus 21 Beschäftigten im Jahr 1995 sind am Standort Leoben rund 800 geworden. Damit ist Leoben nach der Konzernzentrale in Hart bei Graz der zweitgrößte steirische Standort der Gruppe. Eigene Umsatzzahlen der Tochter sind öffentlich nicht ausgewiesen.
Hinter dem Standort steht ein großes Haus. Die Muttergesellschaft KNAPP AG entwickelt seit 1952 Automatisierungstechnik für die Lagerlogistik und beschäftigt heute weltweit rund 9.000 Menschen an etwa 50 Standorten; im Geschäftsjahr 2025/26 lag der Konzernumsatz bei über zwei Milliarden Euro. Ein Familienunternehmen mit steirischen Wurzeln, das in sechs Branchen von Gesundheit über Mode bis zum Handel liefert.
Gearbeitet wird in Leoben an der Schnittstelle von Mechatronik, Softwareentwicklung und Projektmanagement. Techniker konstruieren Förder- und Sortieranlagen, Softwareteams programmieren die Steuerung dahinter, Projektleiterinnen und Projektleiter begleiten die Systeme bis zur Inbetriebnahme beim Kunden. KNAPP bildet auch selbst aus, gruppenweit jährlich rund 140 Lehrlinge in technischen und kaufmännischen Berufen. Das erste Patent für ein papierloses Kommissioniersystem meldete der Leobener Standort schon 1999 an.
