The Department of Landscape, Water and Infrastructure, Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and River Research, BOKU University, seeks applicants for a career position in compliance with § 99 (5) UG. Reference code: 165.

Working time: 40 hours per week. The employment relationship starts on 1 January 2027 and is limited to a period of six years. Allocation is in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group B1 lit. b. The gross monthly salary is at least EUR 5,079.50 depending on previous eligible experience, paid 14 times a year.

Target group

§99 (5) positions offer academics with high potential and relevant achievements the opportunity of an academic career ranging from a postdoc position to assistant professor and on to associate professor. The position of associate professor can be achieved at the latest six years after the appointment. These positions are aimed at academics with a doctorate or PhD degree, with high potential, who are close to or have already successfully completed a habilitation. Experience at other universities or research institutes abroad is expressly welcome.

Tasks and focus areas

  • Research in the field of Hydraulic Engineering and River Research with a focus on Sustainable Hydropower
  • Applied research on the development and optimization of hydraulic engineering measures for sustainable hydropower plants
  • Research on the optimization of hydropower plants from a technical, ecological and socio-economic perspective
  • Further development and innovation of hydraulic engineering elements concerning sustainability, for example sediment and reservoir management and river continuum
  • Publication activities in internationally competitive journals
  • Teaching and supervision or co-supervision of theses within the scope of legal possibilities
  • Knowledge transfer and promotion of junior researchers
  • Administrative tasks as part of university self-governance
  • Acquisition and management of competitively funded national and international research projects
  • Publication and presentation of research results
  • Representation of the field at national and international levels and cooperation with the energy sector
  • Participation in international networks

Required qualifications

  • Completed doctorate in a relevant field
  • Solid professional experience in the scientific field as a postdoc
  • Excellent publication achievements as well as international orientation and recognition
  • Willingness and ability to lead an own research group including evidence of previous success in acquiring third-party funding
  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills and good German skills or willingness to learn German during the first two years
  • Technical knowledge of the functionality, dimensioning and development of sustainable hydropower plants

Desired qualifications

  • International experience as well as experience in teaching and leadership at universities and research institutions
  • Organizational and personnel management skills, including gender and diversity management as well as inclusion and communication accessibility
  • Constructive skills, including planning and execution of large-scale experiments in the hydropower test stand of the BOKU River Lab
  • Research achievements and publications, practical experiences related to technical innovations and constructive design of hydraulic engineering measures in sustainable hydropower
  • Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience in acquisition, management and implementation of research projects
  • Communication skills, science communication, ability to work in a team and independence

An der BOKU in Wien untersuchen Forschende im Wasserbaulabor an der Donau, wie sich Hochwasser bändigen lässt. Andere entwickeln Impfstoffe, prüfen die Sicherheit von Lebensmitteln oder erforschen, wie Wälder dem Klimawandel standhalten. Gegründet 1872, ist die BOKU heute Österreichs Universität für Life Sciences und Nachhaltigkeit. Rund 10.000 Studierende lernen hier, knapp 1.900 Vollzeitkräfte halten Lehre und Forschung in Gang.

Seit Anfang 2025 bündeln sechs Departments die Arbeit der Universität. In den Agrarwissenschaften dreht sich vieles um Boden, Pflanzenbau und Tierhaltung. In der Biotechnologie und den Lebensmittelwissenschaften geht es um Enzyme, Impfstoffe und Lebensmittelsicherheit, im Department Landschaft, Wasser und Infrastruktur um Hochwasserschutz, Verkehrswege und Raumplanung. Dazu kommen die Klima- und Biodiversitätsforschung sowie die Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften. Naturwissenschaft, Technik und Wirtschaft treffen hier unter einem Dach zusammen. In dieser Kombination ist das in Österreich selten.

Hinter dem Forschungsbetrieb steht ein großer Arbeitgeber. Knapp 1.900 Vollzeitäquivalente zählte die BOKU im Wintersemester 2024/25, gut 1.200 davon in der Wissenschaft. Entsprechend breit sind die Berufe. Neben Professorinnen, Doktorandinnen und Laborpersonal beschäftigt die Universität Technikerinnen im Wasserbaulabor, IT-Fachleute, Gärtnerinnen auf der Versuchswirtschaft in Groß-Enzersdorf und Verwaltungskräfte in der Studienorganisation. Gearbeitet wird an mehreren Standorten: rund um die Türkenschanze und in der Muthgasse in Wien, am Standort Tulln in Niederösterreich und an Außenstellen wie dem Wasserbaulabor an der Donau.

Die Wurzeln reichen bis 1872 zurück, in die Anfänge als Hochschule für Bodenkultur. Der Schwerpunkt auf erneuerbaren Ressourcen ist seither geblieben. International ist die BOKU über die europäische Hochschulallianz EPICUR mit acht weiteren Universitäten verbunden, ein Teil der Studien wird auf Englisch angeboten. Das Jahresbudget lag 2023 bei rund 255 Millionen Euro, etwa 70 Millionen kamen aus Forschungsprojekten. Wer hier arbeitet, forscht an Fragen, die selten an Aktualität verlieren: sauberes Wasser, sichere Lebensmittel, der Umgang mit Boden und Klima. Geleitet wird die Universität von Rektorin Eva Schulev-Steindl.
